The acclaimed director pushes his film-making abilities with this nifty paranormal narrative captured wholly from the viewpoint of the spirit. The Black Phone Horror
Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller stands strong despite the lack of a sequel. Located in the late 70s in Denver, a series of kidnappings has left the youth frightened. Once Finney is kidnapped by the villain and locked up in a basement, he dreads a terrible outcome. Yet the disconnected phone mounted nearby continues to ring, with ghostly voices giving advice, and the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen could save him. An effective horror. October 11th, nighttime, Film4
This Dramatic Portrait
In the struggle between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for materialism in Showalter's delightfully tacky true story about the fallen TV preacher and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield portrays the corrupt Bakker, who declares at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye begin capitalizing on the people's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of poor styling, overdone appearance and insincerity, though the lead actress manages to present the character with compassion. Next Tuesday, early morning, the Film4 channel
